Since 2016, the Sonsbeek & State of Fashion Foundation organises two iconic international events in Arnhem; Sonsbeek and State of Fashion. Sonsbeek and State of Fashion are characterised by high artistic quality, international allure and engagement. Both events are nationally and internationally distinctive, enhance the infrastructure for creativity and innovation, stimulate (international) cooperation and strengthen the international reputation of Arnhem and Gelderland as a creative, innovative and green city and region.

Sonsbeek & State of Fashion Foundation realized successful editions of both Sonsbeek in 2016 and 2021, and State of Fashion in 2018 and 2022, and is now happily building for the future.

Initiated in 1949 as a post-World War II reconstruction project, the Sonsbeek exhibition is now working on its 75th anniversary edition. From its first edition, Sonsbeek has made a national and international name for itself as a pioneering exhibition for art in public space. Iconic editions have been curated by the likes of Wim Beeren (1971), Saskia Bos (1986), Valery Smith (1993), Jan Hoet (2001), Anna Tilroe (2008) and ruangrupa (2016). From 2020 to 2022, the ongoing program sonsbeek 20→24 'Force Times Distance' took place under the direction of Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, culminating in a large-scale event in the summer of 2021 at numerous locations in and around Arnhem, including the Kröller-Müller Museum, and, at the end of 2022, the exhibition Ábstracting Parables' at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Read more about the results of the last Sonsbeek edition here.

From June 3 to July 10, 2022, the second edition of State of Fashion took place. Fashion has traditionally been a way of communicating who we are, how we feel, how we relate to each other, to other species and to nature. But gradually the industrial fashion system, with growth and profit as its main objectives, has gained dominance. As a result, the fashion industry is caught in a cycle of overproduction that feeds a culture of overconsumption. 'A society that cares, is a society prepared for repairs,' said co-curators Fashion Open Studio and Not Enough Collective. They invited everyone to participate: from repairing clothes to repairing dysfunctional systems.
The foundation is currently working on the next edition of the State of Fashion fashion biennial: in 2024.
